GREAT NEWS! USAID RELEASES POLICY FOR GENDER EQUALITY AND FEMALE EMPOWERMENT
On March 1st, USAID released its policy for Gender Equality and Female Empowerment, a monumental step towards better integrating gender and including women and girls in U.S. international assistance. This new policy, which had not been updated in 30 years, recognizes that integrating women and girls is essential to effective international assistance across all sectors, including health, climate change, food security, science and technology, economic growth, democracy and governance, and humanitarian assistance. This new mandate will apply to all USAID implementers and contractors, and builds in accountability for gender integration across the agency.
The policy also includes a specific focus on reducing gender-based violence and mitigating its harmful effects on individuals and communities, a critical step towards improving USAID’s efforts to integrate programming to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls internationally throughout the agency’s work in all sectors.
